XCMR is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Joel Ducoste as principal engineer, modeling and simulations. Dr. Ducoste is a professor in the civil, construction, and environmental engineering department at North Carolina State University (NCSU) and associate dean for faculty advancement. He brings a wealth of experience in environmental engineering research, academic leadership, and industry collaboration.
Dr. Ducoste’s career is a testament to his passion for advancing environmental sustainability through research and education. His prolific research output, with more than 170 peer-reviewed publications and reports, has significantly contributed to our understanding of physico-chemical processes in water treatment, wastewater management, and renewable energy. His expertise in computational fluid dynamics modeling will enable XCMR to develop innovative solutions for optimizing water/wastewater process efficiency and infrastructure sustainability.
Dr. Ducoste’s leadership extends beyond the classroom and research lab. He has served as the president of the Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among academics and professionals in the field. His current role on the EPA Board of Scientific Counselors demonstrates his commitment to translating research into impactful policies and practices. At XCMR, Dr. Ducoste will bridge the gap between academia and industry, promoting knowledge transfer and fostering a culture of innovation.
Dr. Ducoste’s research interests span a wide range of critical environmental challenges, including water treatment optimization, wastewater collection system sustainability, renewable energy integration, and solid waste process modeling. His dedication to developing sustainable solutions aligns perfectly with XCMR’s mission to create a more resilient and environmentally responsible future.

Dr. Ducoste holds a BS and MS in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a PhD in environmental engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has received numerous awards, including an NSF Career Award, a Fulbright fellowship, and the WEF Fair Distinguished Engineering Educator Medal. His diverse background, combining academic excellence, industry experience, and leadership in professional organizations, positions him to make a significant impact at XCMR.
